ANOTHER MAKERERE UNIVERSITY PROFFESOR PASSES ON

Less than two months after Prof. Senteza Kajubi’s death, Makerere University has yet again lost its founding professor of the department of psychology.

Prof. Jethro Ariko Opolot 79, died on Thursday on his way to hospital after battling with diabetes for several years.

According to his daughter-in-law, Ms Dorothy Opeitum, who saw him breathe his last, the don who has been living in the Makerere University White Flats, developed breathing complications on Wednesday night and his personal physician, Prof. Marcel Otim, was informed and went to see him at his residence.

Prof. Otim then recommended for Prof. Opolot’s transfer to Mulago hospital. An ambulance was called but on arrival at Mulago hospital, he had already passed on.

Last breath
“I touched his body to feel if he was breathing but he was still,” she said. The fallen professor is renown to have trained majority of students who have gone through the psychology department.

He is also the brain behind the Makerere University Mature age examinations entry scheme – another avenue through which students who do not possess A-level qualifications can join the university after passing an entry examination.

At the time of his death, he had retired from Makerere University but is said to have been lecturing at the Uganda Christian University, Mukono, and at the same time as an associate professor at Kampala International University.
According to Mr Jethro Opolot his younger brother, Prof.

Opolot will be buried today in Serere Odungura, Soroti District. The professor is survived with three children and several grand children.
