Put Your Subject Before Your Grades (and How to Do It the Right Way)

When Clearing got underway for another year, the Telegraph reported that rising tuition fees had caused a sharp increase in demand for ‘jobs-based’ degrees.

This kind of story is becoming more commonplace. Students taking up vocational degrees and job-related learning rather than studying more ‘traditional’ subjects.

The key passage comes at the end of the article:
“But Prof Alan Smithers, director of the Centre for Education and Employment Research at Buckingham University, said the shift in applications may be ‘short-sighted’.
“‘Fees are causing students to think a lot more seriously about the part that going to university is going to play in their future lives and whether they will get a good return for their investment,’ he said.
“‘But it is a little bit short-sighted to simply concentrate on a career above all else at the age of 18. Studying a subject you love, such as the humanities or English literature, will enhance your life and could throw up future employment opportunities that you’re not yet aware of.’”

10 Ways to Spend a Night In,,,,,, at University or ollege

A big part of uni life is spent going out. Away from the dorm is the norm.

But that’s not strictly true. When you’re not studying, doing a part-time job, partying, or doing one of a billion different activities, there are bound to be times when you’re chilling out on the inside.
Then there’s the summer break and other holidays when you’re either back at home or making do with a more limited range of activities on campus.
For all the fun, I’m sure you still spend a lot of time in your digs. And even if you don’t, there’s always the odd night when you’d just rather stay in your room and lay low. However, this doesn’t mean you need to have a dull time, or stop being productive. There are many ways to have a great night resting in your dorm if you’re not in the mood to go out. Here are 10 specific ideas to consider:
dorm (photo by ainlondon)
1. Have a Cheap Meal Night
Chances are you have a tight budget, so clubbing together with mates for some posh but cheap grub is a great treat. Perhaps none of you are ready to make an elaborate meal from scratch, but it’s still cheaper to buy some big meals from the supermarket. Whether it’s pizzas on BOGOF or several family-size ready meals, these quick meals will often prove cheaper than ringing for a takeaway.

A Star No Starter: Why You Are Worth More Than Your Grades

Oxford (photo by Max-Design)When you leave school with 3 A* grades at A-level, it’s pretty impressive. When you fail to get a place at the University of Oxford on those grades, people start talking. That’s what happened to Alastair Herron this year.
Keep your options open
Herron had offers from other universities that he was intent on going to. Regardless of an offer from Oxford, he had his sights set elsewhere. Interviewed on BBC Radio Belfast, Herron said, “I would never stay at Oxford with offers from America so I am not in any way disappointed”.
Grades are not the whole picture
University (and life) is about much more than exam results. Whatever you end up with, life goes on. Many things you set your sights on can still be achieved, albeit a little later and with further work. There are alternative routes in to some fields too.

6 Quick Energy Boosts When Sleep Isn’t Practical

The words ‘student’ and ‘sleep’ don’t mix well.

Too much when you shouldn’t be getting sleep and too little when you should. A recipe for disaster that’s easy to fall into.
Regular bedtime is difficult to commit to with so much going on. Even when you sleep like a baby every single night, that doesn’t always stop the tiredness setting in halfway through the day.
Fear not. There are a number of things you can do to spruce up your mental and physical energy before you pack in a full night of buh-byes.

HERE’S HOW I MAKE MY STUDY PLAN…

Here we are at the edge of the wilderness putting together my study plan for my new courses. Jelly Bean and I like to sit on the screened in porch to read and study. She can watch the meadow while the breeze tickles her nose and I muster my digital resources.  So far we have only seen several doe with their fawns ambling by. The fawns are quite small, only about Jelly Bean’s size. Surprisingly the deer and my collie dog are mutually disinterested. The meadow grass must be too sweet and my dog is to comfortable snuggled up beside me while I work.
I have been working on my strategic and tactical study plan for these next four courses.  What does that mean, exactly? Well, I want to be sure to accomplish personal and professional goals and also pass my courses with higher marks than my 2013 results. That’s the strategic part. I also want monitor weekly and monthly progress through each module, and be certain to master things like jargon and details specific to individual courses. That’s the tactical component.
The first thing I did was download the Study Guides for each course I registered for. It’s so helpful to have them on demand. While reading through them I think about how I am going to study four courses, and how I will approach each individual course. There are very practical things to consider like how much time will be available every day and week, what I should tackle first, like background reading versus primary texts, what texts will best satisfy my needs and the course requirements, and what I want to achieve in the year, the courses, and my degree.  That helps make my ‘strategic’ plan. The outline looks like this:
  1. Goals for the year
    1. Exam Results
    2. Skills and Professional Development
    3. Complete Degree
  2. Reading Goals
    1. Authors and Texts
    2. Reading Skills
  3. Writing Skills
    1. Research Skills
    2. Organization Skills
    3. Expression
    4. Thesis Length Research Paper
Is there an appropriate topic that can be researched across my four courses, like narrative technique, portrayal of women, etc.?
